4. How this event was conceived

When the G7 summit was held in Halifax, Canada, in June 1995, the Mayor of Hakodate was invited by the Mayor of Halifax to participate in some summit-related events. As both cities have similar star-shaped citadels, the Mayor of Hakodate suggested the opening of the International Star-Shaped Citadel Cities Summit in Hakodate in 1997. The Mayor of Halifax agreed to co-chair this summit for the celebration of the 15th anniversary of our city affiliation.

5. Citizen Committee of the International Star-Shaped
Citadel Cities Summit

The Citizen Committee was established on October 11, 1996, by 23 local organizations. The committee prepared related events and the support of the Summit. Major related events include a variety of pre-summit advertisements, the Goryokaku Opening Ceremony and the "International Exchange Day" with the participation of citizens in Goryokaku Park on August 2.
